How to Go About Dog Training

Reward good behavior during training with control. If your dog follows a training command properly then it is acceptable to reward the behavior to a calm animal. Though you may be happy with the accomplishment, excitement on your part leads to excitement on their part and diminishes control of the situation. Be calm, expect calm, then reward appropriately.

Never tie two or more dogs in close vicinity to one another.  The chain of one dog could become wrapped around the other and, as the dogs struggle to free themselves, one or both could be injured.  If a large dog becomes tangled with a smaller one they could wrap up to the point the airway of the latter is closed off and the dog would die.

Do not respond to demands for attention from your dog. Training a dog to be docile and controlled means that you control when attention is given. In the pack, Alphas will ignore these behaviors until the dog is calm and relaxed. Then and only then should you build excitement through play with the animal.

Feed your dog consistent amounts at approximately the same time every day.  This is particularly important during the house training phase of pet ownership.  This allows the dog to establish a regular elimination pattern and the discerning owner can use that pattern to their advantage in speedily training their pet.

Play with your dog often. In order to train your dog efficiently, it is important to develop and nurture a bond between the two of you. Make sure you are taking the time out of your day to play with your dog. It will be fun and stress-reducing for both of you.

When training your dog, be sure to enforce every command you give. This helps your dog understand that they must listen to you when you give a command. If your dog learns to think that he can ignore you when you give a command, it can be very difficult to correct this.

Although a well trained dog can be taught to put up with just about anything, there will be times and situations where they are truly uncomfortable with a person, another animal, or a place. Don't force your dog to suffer through more of this discomfort than is absolutely necessary. There is a reason that they are uncomfortable and you need to determine that reason.

When you are training your dog and establishing your leadership role, do not be averse to letting the dog lick you on the face. This is common behavior in dogs when dealing with the Alpha in the pack. Do not discourage this behavior as it can confuse the animal and confuse your role because you do not show proper response to this servile behavior.
